The client situation
Some consulting questions need a project. Others need a focused conversation.
A client may be choosing between two newsletter offers, checking a proposal's scope, or deciding which interview question to ask next. A short paid consultation can help them examine a narrow decision.
A per-minute decision clinic gives those conversations a defined commercial format. A prepaid balance can help organize repeat advice.
The walkthrough below is fictional. Amir and June, their circumstances, and all USD rates and durations are illustrative. The calculations describe client charges before any deductions, not consultant take-home income.
Start with a decision you can actually help with
Amir advises small businesses on email marketing. His fictional clinic costs $4 per minute and focuses on one decision: choosing the clearer of two email offers.
His service page explains what clients should bring, such as two draft subject lines, the intended audience, and the action they want readers to take. It also states what a short conversation covers and what requires a separate project.
The deliverable is a discussion of the options and a suggested next step. Amir does not promise a conversion increase or enough extra sales to cover the consultation.
A useful clinic description might say: “Bring two versions of one offer. We will discuss clarity, audience fit, and what to test next.” The scope is concrete enough for a client to decide whether to book.
Set up the session journey
Ownlybiz includes native chat, voice, and video on every plan. In Services & Rates → Per-minute rates, Amir chooses the channels he can serve well and sets the rates. He completes the account, approval, and Stripe requirements before offering paid sessions. Prepaid credit is configured in its own tab in Services & Rates.
He sets his timezone and availability for booked appointments and keeps outside commitments in mind. External calendar synchronization is not currently supported.
June finds his clinic through an article explaining common offer-writing problems. Her journey looks like this:
1. Read the service page. She sees the per-minute rate, subject of the consultation, availability, and preparation instructions.
2. Prepare one decision. She brings the two alternatives and enough context for a useful conversation.
3. Start an available session. They use the offered chat, voice, or video channel after the service and payment requirements are satisfied.
4. Close with a next step. They identify what June can test or revise, use End Session, and review the session record.
A suggested 15-minute conversation sets an expectation. Amir should agree how to handle additional time rather than imply that the suggestion is an automatic billing cap.
Make the pricing easy to follow
At the fictional $4 rate, with no introductory time or discount, a session with 12 billed minutes costs:
12 × $4 = $48.
If June expects occasional follow-up questions, she can use a prepaid money balance with Amir. Suppose she starts with $100. After that $48 session, $52 remains. A later session with seven billed minutes costs $28, leaving $24.
Per-minute pricing also handles shorter intervals: eight minutes and thirty seconds at $4 per minute is $34. The calculation uses elapsed whole seconds and rounds the amount to cents. It is elapsed session time, including reading and thinking, rather than a count of messages or speaking time.
Prepaid balance is available across Ownlybiz plans for supported per-minute sessions with the same expert. It is distinct from fixed-session package credits, and it should not be described as a recurring retainer, automatic monthly top-up, or transferable wallet.
A prepaid session ends when its balance is depleted; a top-up supports a new session.
| Fictional balance activity | Service amount | Balance remaining |
|---|---|---|
| Initial prepaid credit | $100 funded | $100 |
| First session lasting 12 billed minutes at $4 | $48 | $52 |
| Later session lasting 7 billed minutes at $4 | $28 | $24 |

Add capacity only when the service can support it
Live text consultations may suit a clinic where clients need time to read and draft. Ownlybiz's default plan ceilings allow one simultaneous chat on Starter, up to five on Pro, and up to twenty on Scale. The setting starts at one. Settings → Availability shows the active allowance and lets the expert save a chat limit; account controls also affect availability. Voice and video are exclusive of other active human sessions.
Amir keeps complex decisions to one client at a time and only increases chat capacity if he can maintain clear response expectations. Each active chat is separate and continues accruing time when he switches rooms, so he explains that before accepting overlapping paid conversations.
Check the fit before you launch
A decision clinic fits bounded, conversational advice with enough context to be useful quickly. It is a poor fit for an extensive audit, research-heavy recommendation, or work that requires reviewing many confidential documents before giving an answer.
Start with one clearly scoped offer and examine whether clients understand the price, arrive prepared, and leave with a usable next step. Repeat purchases are evidence to measure, not an outcome to promise.
Ownlybiz Starter is $39 USD/month, Pro $99, and Scale $159. Native sessions and prepaid balance are included across plans; fixed-session packages require Pro or Scale. New direct accounts pay 1.6% plus separate Stripe charges. Eligible businesses are currently in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. The two-calendar-month trial requires a payment method; client-payment fees still apply during the trial.
Review the plans and set up your decision clinic.
What kind of consulting question fits a short paid session?
Choose a narrow decision that the client can explain with a small amount of context, such as comparing two versions of one offer. An extensive audit or research-heavy recommendation needs a separately scoped engagement.
Does a prepaid balance create a monthly retainer?
No. It is a money balance for supported per-minute sessions with the same expert. It is separate from fixed-session package credits and does not itself create a recurring retainer or automatic monthly top-up.
What happens if the discussion needs more time?
A suggested duration is a service expectation, not an automatic custom spending cap. Agree on the scope and intended finish before starting, track elapsed time, and ask for explicit consent before extending at the stated rate. The client can choose to stop.
